## Commentary

Portrait of Jan Valckenburgh c. 1660 Oil on canvas, 128 x 102 cm Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam Jan Valckenburgh \(1623-1667\) was the Director-General of the West India Company. He is depicted three-quarter in armour, standing next to a table at a window with a black slave, who holds a gold medal. In the background the castle of Elmina can be seen. The pendant of this painting represents Dina Lems.
