## Commentary

Offspring of an artistic family of Hungarian descent, Markó first studied in Florence, but in 1851 went to Vienna, where he primarily painted Romantic genre pictures and landscapes. Like his father, he was attracted to the beauty of Italian landscape, which he populated with shepherds and local folk people in his paintings. He excelled in charcoal drawings. The group of poor charcoal burners in this painting may have been intended as homage to a medium in which he expressed great talent.
