# View of the frescoes of Months [View the canonical artwork record]() ## Artwork - Artist: [UNKNOWN MASTER, Italian]() - Date: 1351-1400 - Technique: Fresco ## Commentary An exceptional secular fresco cycle of the Months \(only eleven from the twelve\) survived in the Eagle's Tower of the Castello del Buonconsiglio in Trent. The dimension of the room is 6 x 5,8 m. The height of the frescoes is 3 m, the draped fabric painted below replaces the original wainscoting, which was painted with a sequence of niches. During the Gothic period a secular ruler would have preferred to have his residence decorated with tapestries rather than frescoes. While tapestries could provide desirable insulation during the winter months, more important was the impact they made because of their value. Because tapestries were much more expensive than frescoes, they could convey to the guests the wealth, therefore the power, of their host.
