# True and False Forgiveness [View the canonical artwork record]() ## Artwork - Artist: [HOLBEIN, Hans the Younger]() - Date: 1501-1550 - Technique: Woodcut, 79 x 270 mm ## Commentary True and False Forgiveness c. 1525 Woodcut, 79 x 270 mm Kupferstichkabinett, Öffentliche Kunstsammlung, Basel Holbein was inevitably affected by Martin Luther's teachings, and he designed a pair of woodcuts addressing Reformation issues. Both designs were cut by Heinrich Lützelberger and printed around 1525-26, before Holbein went to England. Each of these works, Christ as the True Light and True and False Forgiveness, takes up the arguments of Luther.
