As the large main front was usually constructed after the completion of the church, architects of the 15th and 16th centuries were particularly on demand for work on fronts. Although variations in Late Gothic fronts are enormous, they are almost always new interpretations of older models. Although situated on territory belonging to the Holy Roman Empire, the cathedral of Toul in Lorraine had been closely associated with the Gothic style of Reims. Begun in the early 13th century, the west front was completed in the late 15th century. It is one of the great achievements of Late Gothic.
