## Commentary

This fascinating portrait of the Palumbo-Fossati still quotes from Canova, as the painter shows the young girl at the centre with her arms uplifted. This said, the spirit underlying the painting is completely new. Romantic sensibility is already alive in this rare example of a conversational scene with a Venetian ambiance.
