# Lucas de Gail: Roman de Tristan [View the canonical artwork record]() ## Artwork - Artist: [MINIATURIST, French]() - Date: 1201-1250 - Technique: Manuscript \(Est. 59\) ## Commentary Lucas de Gail: Roman de Tristan 13th century Manuscript \(Est. 59\) Biblioteca Estense, Modena This manuscript contains one of the various prose versions of the story of Tristan and Isolde by the 12th-century author Lucas de Gail. The surviving decoration of the codex consists of twenty-seven pen drawings set in the lower margins of the pages. They were executed by a French artist who only partially coloured the background and figures, the faces of which are characterised by a single touch of red on the cheeks.
