## Commentary

This painting depicts a winter landscape with skaters on a frozen waterway. Many of Antonie Beerstraten&#39;s winter scenes have a topographical element. This painting shows an imposing Gothic church with a castle beyond. The elegant, elongated figures are characteristic of Beerstraten. They represent a broad range of Dutch society, from the fashionable couple in the centre foreground, to working men who are using the ice to transport goods by sledge.
