# Portrait of Madame de Canaples [View the canonical artwork record]() ## Artwork - Artist: [CLOUET, Jean]() - Date: 1501-1550 - Technique: Oil on panel, 36 x 29 cm ## Commentary Portrait of Madame de Canaples c. 1525 Oil on panel, 36 x 29 cm National Gallery of Scotland, Edinburgh Very few works can be attributed to Jean Clouet with certainty. A series of portrait drawings, mainly in Chantilly, are traditionally attributed to him. Some paintings, based on the drawings are presumably by him. Some of these paintings are largely Flemish in inspiration, whereas the Portrait of Madame de Canaples \(Marie d'Assigny, 1502-1558\) is broader and more abstract in its form. Madame de Canaples was a maid of honour of Queen Claude of France.
