## Artwork

- Artist: [CARSTENS, Asmus Jakob](<https://beta.wga.hu/artists/carstens-asmus-jakob-r2c2b97a4f39a08>)
- Date: 1701-1750
- Technique: Black chalk heightened with white on paper, 745 x 985 mm

## Commentary

Carsten's drawing is an allegory on the relation between night, sleep, and death. The darker side of human life was rather suppressed in the Enlightenment, but the Romantics made it their own in both literature and the fine arts. The sheets of drawings are joined and mounted on board.
