## Commentary

&lt;a href=&#34;\#&#34; onClick=&#34;w=window.open \(&#39;/database/glossary/note02.html&#39;, &#39;newWin&#39;, &#39;scrollbars=yes,status=no,dependent=yes,screenX=0,screenY=0,width=300,height=400&#39;\);w.opener=this;w.focus\(\);return false&#34;&gt;Catalogue numbers:&lt;/a&gt; F 633, JH 1974. Van Gogh only dared tackle Biblical subjects if he did it obliquely, via models. Thus he painted his own versions of the Pietà and the Good Samaritan by Delacroix, and of The Raising of Lazarus and a monumental angel by Rembrandt. These are highly unusual subjects for van Gogh.
