# Exterior view [View the canonical artwork record]() ## Artwork - Artist: [ARCHITECT, English]() - Date: 1551-1600 - Technique: Photo ## Commentary Burghley House was built for Sir William Cecil, later 1st Baron Burghley, who was Lord High Treasurer to Queen Elizabeth I of England, between 1555 and 1587. No architect was wholly responsible for the building, Lord Burghley himself must have made a good many of the suggestions embodied in the design. He represents a coming type: the architectural dilettante. Burghley House is a mighty rectangle of about 40 by 60 metres with an inner courtyard. The central feature of this courtyard is a three-storeyed pavilion, designed on the French triumphal arch motif with typically French niches between coupled columns. It has three orders, correctly applied; but on the third floor between the Corinthian columns there sits an English mullioned bay window and above that the pavilion shoots out bits of strapwork and obelisk - a crop of Flemish decoration.
