## Commentary

Reception at Compiègne in 1810 1894-96 Oil on panel, 104 x 138 cm The Hermitage, St. Petersburg François Flameng produced a series of paintings devoted to Napoleon Bonaparte. The four paintings treat episodes in the emperor&#39;s biography as genre scenes with an almost intimate approach. The paintings were acquired by the Russian emperor Nicholas II and presented to his wife, Alexandra Fiodorovna.
