# Tomb of Prince-Bishop Friedrich Christian von Plettenberg [View the canonical artwork record]() ## Artwork - Artist: [UNKNOWN MASTER, German]() - Date: 1701-1750 - Technique: Marble and alabaster ## Commentary Friedrich Christian von Plettenberg \(1644-1706\) became Prince-Bishop of Münster in 1688. His tomb was begun in 1707 after his death by the Gröninger family, a family of sculptors active over several generations in Westphalia. It was the work of Johann Mauritz Gröninger \(c. 1650-1707\) and his son Johann Wilhelm Gröninger \(c. 1675-1724\). They were assisted by Gottfried Laurenz Pictorius, member of a family of architects.
