# Boccaccio: Of Famous Women [View the canonical artwork record]() ## Artwork - Artist: [MINIATURIST, French]() - Date: 1451-1500 - Technique: Manuscript \(Ms. 191\), 427 x 308 mm ## Commentary Boccaccio: Of Famous Women 1465-70 Manuscript \(Ms. 191\), 427 x 308 mm Bibliothèque Publique et Universitaire, Geneva The Decameron was not the only work that made Boccaccio \(1313-1375\) famous throughout Europe during his lifetime. He wrote in 1361 a chronological collection of biographies of famous women. In 1401 this treatise was translated into French by an anonymous author. The magnificent miniatures in the manuscript now kept in Geneva were painted by an important master who is now thought to have been identified as Colin d'Amiens \(died after 1482\). He was a court painter to Louis XI, and was held in high esteem by his contemporaries. The miniature on folio 221r exhibits a compositional style that is typical of this manuscript. The painting is divided into two vertical sections, each of which depicts a different event. However, the architectural backdrop is common to both compartments, and thus unites them.
