In 1890 in Saint-Rémy van Gogh hoped again to complete a series of flowering fruit trees, as he did earlier in Arles. Unfortunately, poor health prevented him from pursuing his goal, and he recovered only after all blossoms were gone. Van Gogh painted chestnut trees both in the south and the north. In 1890 in Auvers they offered him an opportunity to celebrate spring after all, and to make up for the missed opportunities in Saint-Rémy.
