Phoroneus, inventor of law \(lower register\) 1334-37 Marble Museo dell'Opera del Duomo, Florence This relief is one of the seven 'discoverers of the crafts' in the lower register of the socle of the Campanile, of which three are on the south side. Phoroneus was the primordial king of the city of Argos in Greek mythology, and a hero of the area. He was the son of the river god Inachus and either Melia, the ash-tree nymph, or Argia, the personification of the region of Argolid.
