## Commentary

Scenes from the Life of St Francis: 4. Death and Ascension of St Francis 1325-28 Fresco, 280 x 450 cm Bardi Chapel, Santa Croce, Florence This scene is situated at eye level on the wall left to the entrance of the chapel. In an extremely compressed space, St. Francis&#39; disciples have gathered for his funeral. One of them notices that the saints soul is being carried heavenward by angels. While one monk kisses the stigmata, a disbelieving nobleman examines the wound in St. Francis&#39; side.
