## Commentary

The detail shows the kneeleing figure of St Bernard. In the immediate foreground is a trompe l&#39;oeil picture, made more convincing by the open book which leans against it. It is a motif worthy of Fra Bartolomeo&#39;s predecessor at the Dominican convent of San Marco, Fra Angelico.
