# Exterior view [View the canonical artwork record]() ## Artwork - Artist: [ARCHITECT, French]() - Date: 1101-1150 - Technique: Photo ## Commentary The Church of the Holy Sepulchre is one of the most Holy sites in the Christian world, the site of the burial place of Jesus. The 12th-century structure is located on the traditional site of Golgotha, the crucifixion and burial site of Jesus. It had been built by Constantine in the 4th century and it was he who founded the rotunda that contained the tomb of Christ. In 1099 the Crusaders take the city and hold it until 1187. They restored the church and enlarged it between 1100 and 1140 and inaugurated it in 1149 as St. Sepulchre. The entrance seen in the present picture, is their work.
