# Portrait of a Woman [View the canonical artwork record]() ## Artwork - Artist: [STRIGEL, Bernhard]() - Date: 1501-1550 - Technique: Oil on linden panel, 37 x 25 cm ## Commentary The sitter is luxuriously dressed in a brownish red gown trimmed with black velvet. Her headdress is elaborately decorated with geometric pattern, her jewelry is as extravagant as her dress. The identity of the woman in not known, her elaborate and costly attire indicate that she belongs to the elite echelons of society. In fact, the portrait stands as an important document of German high fashion and taste in the first part of the sixteenth century.
