## Commentary

Whilst the architecture of the Romanesque period focused mainly on religious and secular buildings, it was also becoming aware of the technological tasks which it could perform: there are mills, canals, brickworks, mines, roads, and bridges. Hardly any of these constructions were built to last, with the exception of the wooden and stone bridges which have survived here and there, at least partially. The best known Romanesque bridge is the Pont-Saint-Bénézet \(or the Pont d'Avignon\). Legend has it that the building work on it was begun by Saint Benedict who was laid to rest in 1185 in the chapel of Saint-Nicolas which is situated on the second pier of the bridge. The bridge was seriously damaged in 1226 and was rebuilt at a slightly raised level. Further repairs were carried out in the fifteenth century but from the seventeenth century onwards the bridge has been incomplete. All that remains now are three wide, flat arches and three piers. The burial chapel of Saint Benedict with its polygonal apse and barrel-vaulted nave is set on one of the three piers.
