# Arab Chieftains in Council \(The Negotiator\) [View the canonical artwork record]() ## Artwork - Artist: [VERNET, Horace]() - Date: 1801-1850 - Technique: Oil on canvas ## Commentary Horace Vernet was instructed in art by his father Carle, son of the renowned landscape and marine painter Claude-Joseph Vernet, and also studied with his maternal grandfather, Jean Michel Moreau, and with François Andre Vincent. After an Italian journey in 1820, he became an instructor of history painting in 1826 at the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Paris. From 1829 to 1835, he served as director of the French Academy in Rome. In the years after 1830, he enjoyed the favour of the new Paris regime and became the most popular artist in France.
