## Commentary

Among Kersting&#39;s finest accomplishments were interiors, which, unlike later Biedermeier depictions of domestic comfort and self-sufficiency, captured the mood of individual rooms and the way they reflected the thoughts and feelings of their occupants. The painting represents a rear view of a figure, a popular theme of the painters of the time.
