## Commentary

The foundations of the cathedral of Pécs are from the Roman period, around the fourth century. It is believed that there was an early Christian basilica at the site. The old church burnt down in 1064, its replacement was a three-aisled lower church, and above it the oldest existing example of a three-aisled basilica without a vault or transept, but with three apses and towers. This type of building was widespread in the twelfth century. In the Middle Ages the church was enlarged with two lateral towers and Gothic chapels.
