Gypsy Girl defies the tradition of Romanticism and neo-Classicism, which dominated Russian art in the first half of the nineteenth century. As a founding member of Peredvizhniki, or ‘The Wanderers', a group of artists who aimed to bring art into life, like their contemporaries in literature and in music, such as Feodor Dostoyevsky and Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakoff, respectively, Makovsky's painting is a strong response to Russia's traditional Slavic heritage.
