# Exterior view [View the canonical artwork record]() ## Artwork - Artist: [ARCHITECT, German]() - Date: 1001-1050 - Technique: Photo ## Commentary In its ground plan and elevation, the former nunnery church in Ottmarsheim is a simplified imitation of the Palatine Chapel of Charlemagne in Aachen. The octagonal, centrally planned building is also encircled by an octagonal ambulatory. In the west there is a single-tower front, whilst the east has a small rectangular choir with a gallery. The photo shows a view of the church from the south-east. Inspired by the Aachen model, the western end of the church was given greater prominence by means of a tower. Towers were built during the Ottonian period at many other places, too.
