# Portrait Medal of Paolo Giovio [View the canonical artwork record]() ## Artwork - Artist: [UNKNOWN MASTER, Italian]() - Date: 1501-1550 - Technique: Bronze, diameter 4,3 cm ## Commentary The medal probably represents Paolo Giovio \(1483-1552\) who was an Italian physician, historian and biographer, and prelate. The profile head with the horns and ears of a faun is composed of animal parts: the forehead is the mouth of a lion, the chin is a scaly fish, the nose is a toad. The back side of the medal shows a satyr-head composed of phalluses.
