# St. Albans Psalter [View the canonical artwork record]() ## Artwork - Artist: [MINIATURIST, English]() - Date: 1101-1150 - Technique: Manuscript, 276 x 194 mm ## Commentary St. Albans Psalter 1120s Manuscript, 276 x 194 mm St Godehard's Church, Hildesheim One of the illustrations in the St Albans Psalter \(folio 3r\) is of the Annunciation. It contains an iconographic innovation, depicting the Virgin Mary with an open book in her lap. She looks as if she has just been interrupted in her reading by the miraculous appearance of the Archangel Gabriel. The use of this motif indicates a greater literacy at this time among both noble and religious women.
