## Commentary

The two women standing to one side on the right are part of Ghirlandaio&#39;s typical wealth of figures. They are less &#34;stopgaps&#34; to balance the composition than an opportunity for Ghirlandaio to present variations on the theme of &#34;standing female figure&#34;.
