## Commentary

An Allegory of the Tudor Succession: The Family of Henry VIII c. 1590 Oil on panel, 114 x 182 cm Yale Center for British Art, New Haven In this painting Henry VIII, surrounded by his family, sits beneath the national coat-of-arms. England was given a self-conscious national identity under the Tudors, who made a deliberate policy of appealing both to the reconciliation of factions and English historic tradition.
