## Commentary

This panel once formed part of a polyptych. The monastery of San Ponziano in the Italian town of Lucca, where the artist worked between 1380 and 1385, belonged to the Olivetan order, which explains the unusual attire of St Benedict. Aretino has shown him in the white habit of the Olivetan congregation rather than in black, as is traditional for the Benedictines.
