## Commentary

The crippled painter found &#34;unaffected feelings&#34; in the world of Montmarte, far from the emotional hypocrisy of the bourgeoisie. Nonetheless, he did not idealize the milieu. He drew whores large and small with great affection but without sentimental gloss - and if no drawing paper happened to be available, then on tablecloths, the margins of newspaper or marble slabs; deeply moving compositions of admirable conciseness.
