## Commentary

Ermine, royal blue velvet embroidered with gold thread, and exquisite lace against pearly pink skin, the recently widowed, now regent Marie de Médicis had herself portrayed in her coronation dress. The daughter of Grand Duke Francesco I de&#39; Medici identified so completely with her country of adoption that even her pearl-and-jewel-studded stomacher is shaped like the french fleur-de-lys.
