# Château de Madrid [View the canonical artwork record]() ## Artwork - Artist: [ANDROUET DU CERCEAU, Jacques the Elder]() - Date: 1551-1600 - Technique: Pen and black ink on vellum, 512 x 748 mm ## Commentary Château de Madrid c. 1570 Pen and black ink on vellum, 512 x 748 mm British Museum, London The Château de Madrid near the Bois de Boulogne was begun in 1527, it is not certain who was responsible for the plans for the building. The Italian Girolamo della Robbia was responsible for the terracotta decoration, and some critics have maintained that he was the designer of the whole château. The building has true 'logge', an Italian arrangement introduced by Girolamo della Robbia; but the high-pitched roof is essentially French and must be attributed to local masons. The drawing shows an oblique view of the front of the Château, with figures on the steps and balconies. The drawing is one of seven drawings \(drawn on four sheets\) on the Château de Madrid drawn by Androuet du Cerceau for the album 'Les plus excellents bastiments de France'. The château was abandoned and demolished in the 18th century.
