Van Gogh lived in Nuenen between December 1883 and November 1885, first in the house of his father who was the pastor of the Nuenen parish. He made drawings and oil paintings of the parental gardens as well as the street façade and the garden façade of the parsonage. From the garden of the parsonage there was a good view of the tower of the old ruined village church. This old tower standing alone in the middle of the field appeared in the earliest works which van Gogh painted in Nuenen.
