## Commentary

In spite of having \(falsely\) the monogram of Frans Hals, the painting is not by Frans Hals or by his sons. It was painted in the style of Frans Hals not long after Hals introduced the subject into the art world of Haarlem, that is, from the second half of the 1630s or the 1640s.
