# Virgin and Child [View the canonical artwork record]() ## Artwork - Artist: [MAITANI, Lorenzo]() - Date: 1301-1350 - Technique: Marble and bronze ## Commentary The lunette above the central doorway of Orvieto Cathedral was filled with a a Maestà or Virgin and Child beneath a bronze canopy with three pigmented bronze angels on either side. The Virgin and Child were made of marble and very likely predate the bronze elements. These elements are attributed to Lorenzo Maitani, the most important architect of the Duomo of Orvieto.
