## Commentary

This drawing by Bernardino Luini is considered one of the greatest pastel drawings of the 16th century. The tenderness and softness of the facial features arise out of a finely executed sfumato technique for example to be found in &lt;A onclick=&#34;return OpenOther\(&#39;/html/l/leonardo/08heads/07isabel.html&#39;\)&#34; HREF=&#34;/html/l/leonardo/08heads/07isabel.html&#34;&gt;Leonardo da Vinci&#39;s cartoon Isabelle de Este.&lt;/A&gt; Up to the 19th century the drawing was attributed to Leonardo. Due to Luini&#39;s marked tendency to idealize his characters, the identity of the sitter cannot be established.
