## Commentary

The Last Judgment by Hieronymus Francken II is the companion piece of the Damned Being Cast into Hell by Frans Francken II. Frans II and Hieronymus II were brothers, they were taught by their uncle Hieronymus I at the same time. This explains the similarity of their hand. Both scenes were based on engravings from a cycle by Hendrik Goltzius. In the Last Judgment most of the figures were taken from Michelangelo's fresco in the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican.
