## Commentary

The painter portrayed himself more than ten times. This self-portrait is the one he offered the Académie Royale in Paris in 1776. By 1776 the artist&#39;s mental disturbances impeded him from working properly, and he offered this unfinished picture, in which irony is tinged with a certain disenchantment.
