# General view [View the canonical artwork record]() ## Artwork - Artist: [ARCHITECT, Italian]() - Date: 1251-1300 - Technique: Photo ## Commentary The Piazza del Campo was planned from the first as an entire new city centre that would gradually take shape around the Palazzo Pubblico, the seat of government. The starting point lies in the plans for the Palazzo Pubblico. These were first considered in 1282, although a definite decision was not taken until 1288 and building seems to have started ten years later. In 1307-10, relatively low two-storeyed wings, intended as the quarters of the Podestà and of the Council of Nine, were added to the original square central section of the Palazzo. The wings were only extended upwards in 1680-81. The new prison and the Salone del Gran Consiglio along the Via Salicotto were built in 1327 and 1330-40, respectively. The most spectacular addition was the Torre del Mangia, founded in 1325 but only built in 1338-48.
