## Commentary

During his stay in Paris, Töpffer was exposed to the influence of Pierre Henri de Valenciennes, not only the acknowledged master of the paysage historique but the strongest advocate of plein-air painting. Töpffer was the first Swiss artist to embrace Valenciennes&#39;s maxims on landscape painting, as seen in the present example.
