## Commentary

This three quarter length portrait of Midshipman \(later Captain\) John Windham Dalling RN \(1789-1853\) memorialises his presence on HMS Defence at the Battle of Trafalgar \(21st October 1805\). The painting was exhibited at the Royal Academy in London in 1806.
