## Commentary

Bacchanalia of Children c. 1790 Oil on canvas, 32 x 84 cm Musée du Louvre, Paris Sauvage was a specialist in imitating antique bas-reliefs in grisaille paintings. Here, in a beige monochrome on a black marble background, nine putti take part in a bacchanalia, a celebration in honour of Bacchus.
