# Interior view [View the canonical artwork record]() ## Artwork - Artist: [ARCHITECT, English]() - Date: 1101-1150 - Technique: Photo ## Commentary The most important large building at the end of the high Romanesque period in England is Peterborough Abbey. It was started around 1118. Abbot Jean de Séez \(John de Sais, 1114-1125\) replaced the original church, which was consecrated in 972 and burnt down in 1116. By 1143, the choir, whose three aisles ended in apses and which had an alternating system of supports consisting of octagonal and round pillars, was ready, the ribs in the side aisles were added later. The photo shows the view of the nave towards the east.
