# High Altar of St Mary \(Dormition of the Virgin\) [View the canonical artwork record]() ## Artwork - Artist: [STOSS, Veit]() - Date: 1451-1500 - Technique: Wood ## Commentary High Altar of St Mary \(Dormition of the Virgin\) 1477-89 Wood Church of St. Mary, Cracow In the central panel of the high altar in the church of St Mary in Cracow, the Virgin's death and her reunion with her Son, are conceived as so closely related that Stoss has depicted Mary upright, tenderly supported by a gigantic apostle, as she falls asleep.
