# The Destruction of the Turkish Fleet in Chesme Bay [View the canonical artwork record]() ## Artwork - Artist: [HACKERT, Jacob Philipp]() - Date: 1751-1800 - Technique: Oil on canvas, 163 x 220 cm ## Commentary The Destruction of the Turkish Fleet in Chesme Bay 1771 Oil on canvas, 163 x 220 cm The Hermitage, St. Petersburg The naval Battle of Chesma took place on 5–7 July 1770 near and in Çeºme \(Chesme or Chesma\) Bay, in the area between the western tip of Anatolia and the island of Chios, which was the site of a number of past naval battles between the Ottoman Empire and the Republic of Venice.
