# General view [View the canonical artwork record]() ## Artwork - Artist: [ARCHITECT, English]() - Date: 1051-1100 - Technique: Photo ## Commentary In the 7th century, Irish monks established Lindisfarne monastery on the Holy Island in Northumbria. It became a great Christian centre under Bishop Cuthbert \(died 687\). In the early 8th century, the famous illuminated manuscript known as the <a onclick="return OpenOther\('/html/zgothic/miniatur/0701-750/1irish/2lindis1.html'\)" href="/html/zgothic/miniatur/0701-750/1irish/2lindis1.html">Lindisfarne Gospels,</a> an illustrated Latin copy of the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, was made probably at Lindisfarne. The monastery suffered a devastating raid by the Vikings in 793. The Benedictines in Durham rebuilt it at the end of the 11th century and established a priory, the ruins of which can be seen today.
