# Fabbriche Nuove [View the canonical artwork record]() ## Artwork - Artist: [SANSOVINO, Jacopo]() - Date: 1501-1550 - Technique: Photo ## Commentary Ever since two disastrous fires in the Rialto business district in 1505 and 1514, city officials had been rebuilding and renovating shops, storerooms, and offices in this vital and cramped part of the city. In 1550 the government decided to demolish some indecorous, decaying wooden shops along the Grand Canal and build a single large structure housing shops and warehouses for the city's fruit market. Commercial leases paid the construction expenses. The elderly Jacopo Sansovino, still the dominant architect in the city, designed and oversaw the project. Employing brick and stone for all the walls and foundations, he made the structure fireproof.
